What is HTML?

Merely as defined according to the W3C, HTML is the language for describing the structure of Web pages. HTML gives authors the means to:

  • Publish online documents with headings, text, tables, lists, photos, etc.
  • Retrieve online information via hypertext links, at the click of a button.
  • Design forms for conducting transactions with remote services, for use in searching for information, making reservations, ordering products, etc.
  • Include spread-sheets, video clips, sound clips, and other applications directly in their documents.

HTML stands for: the Hypertext Markup Language. HTML provides the structure for building web pages.

Now you have known what is HTML, let’s build together your first web page.

mysinglehost-tips For the purpose of the training, i suggest you to use any bloc note software you have installed under your computer. I’m using notepad software because i have a windows computer, but for those who have a Mac computer, you can use TextEdit or any compatible others.

OK let’s go now!

1- Directly on your bloc note software, type this code below:

Figure 1

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<title>My first web page</title>
</head>
<body>
Hello World!
</body>
</html>

2- After that click on File menu, then click on Save As, name your new page like this: hello.html.

3- On Save as type, select => All Files and bellow in this same window, you’ll see this option: Encoding. Please, select UTF-8.

4- Finally click on save button, but make sure to save your new page on your Desktop, Documents folder or any other folder you want.

5- Now, your new page is ready just double click on it to open it, that’s it! You have been created your first new HTML5 web page.
